Anterior pelvic tilt is extremely common, especially in people that sit for long periods of time. The proper way to fix this is to strengthen your glutes and hamstrings (NOT STRETCH THEM, which makes it worse) in order to correct the imbalance around your hips. šŸ”¹anterior pelvic tilt is a bit more difficult to see but with this comparative view, look at the space between the lumbar spine and floor and shape of abdomen. The maintenance of the shape of the abdomen in the pic below indicates better control of the position of the pelvis.

The time between the first and second attempt was about 45 seconds. So what changed? What did the body receive that made such a difference within less than a minute?

Thatā€™s it. About 25 seconds of slow gentle foam rolling along the mid to lower thoracic spine followed by slow, controlled posterior pelvic tilts to fire up transversus abdominis.

The foam rolling stimulated spinal ligaments that allowed for inhibition of muscles that perpetuate anterior pelvic tilt AND fired up muscles that create anterior pelvic tilt. A few posterior pelvic tilts after allowed the body to realize integrity in the deep core.

So how did this affect the shoulder? When there is an increased sense of safety, the body will allow for more ease in movement. When the intrinsic core doesnā€™t provide us a stable foundation, we can feel ā€œunsafeā€ while moving our limbs. With safety and ease comes decreased pain. Simple.

I.e. Pushups, punches, more pushups, spear-fingers, etc.ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €

Try this "test" movement. Can you raise your leg parallel to the floor? Well done if you can. Now perform 10 reps? Excellent if you do it. What if you found it difficult? A few possibilities. Weak Glutes, specifically your glute med. Hip issues tightness. Lower back issues. Why is this important? Because you are now "confined" indoors possibly sitting down even more often than before, your glutes your lower back your hips become an essential area to work on. Otherwise there will be a higher chance of lower back injuries, hip restrictions and a distribution to your everyday ability to move and exercise at a high level with consistency. Let me know did you do it? Then did you do it for 10 reps? If not seriously DM me I can help you fix this.

From day 1, Liz taught me fundamentals that are beneficial for pregnant, postpartum, beginners, athletes, men or women. I not only understand how to properly execute breath, alignment and posture in any workout that I do, but I fully understand the WHY behind everything. Itā€™s because of Liz that I feel confident and knowledgable in all my workouts and understand how to get the most effective results.

At 9 wks pregnant, I started having shortness of breath. A trip to urgent care, ER, chest x-ray, vascular ultrasound, blood work and an EKG later - I was sent home with a clean bill of health and still short of breath. It wasnā€™t until I told Liz that she explained the important of breath and back mobility. I started daily foam rolling, mid-back stretches and back-breathing exercises. Lizā€™s techniques have drastically changed my breathing and comfortability throughout pregnancy.

Also, Iā€™ve been working with Liz to specifically strengthen my glutes, hamstrings and core throughout my 20ish wks of working with her. I can now effectively activate muscles that I honestly didnā€™t even know I had before! I started having pubic symphysis pain around 22 wks, which is relatively early to be getting any sort of pubic pain according to my doctor, so she recommended a maternity belt. Simultaneously, I was working with Liz on hamstring strength. After about 4 weeks of daily hamstring activation and foregoing the maternity belt, I am now free of all pubic pain (for now anyway!). In both the instance of my shortness of breath and my pubic pain, Liz was able to get to the root cause of the problem and provided me with tools and knowledge to help strengthen my body in ways that doctors couldnā€™t. I believe that an OBs job is to safely deliver a healthy baby -other than that itā€™s up to the mama-to-be to build a tribe to conquer the other hurdles of pregnancy. I wholeheartedly believe that Liz has been the single most influential person in my ā€œtribeā€ throughout my pregnancy in so many ways. I highly recommend working with Liz during pregnancy & beyond.

Upper crossed syndrome occurs when the muscles in the neck, shoulders, and chest become deformed, usually as a result of poor posture. The muscles that are typically the most affected are the upper trapezius and the levator scapula, which are the back muscles of the shoulders and neck. It is important to get a good stretch in before you do any lifting or if your going to be sitting looking at a screen for a long time. Try these exercises and stretches. And as always remember if your in pain call your therapist. Also Look into getting massages as well they will really help. ā£

3. (Bottom left) Banded resistance to strengthen Anterior tibialis
4. (Bottom right) Banded resistance to strengthen Posterior Tibialis

Each day Iā€™ll be sharing a different stretch or mobility exercise to help you move at your best and decrease the risk of injury!

This one is the Brettzel 2.0 stretch that all of my clients love!

It is a great exercise for the posterior chain muscles (glutes/back muscles)

1.) Start off in a seated position with the front thigh and shoulders parallel with each other. 
2.) Then rotate back and forth to the side of the down hip and the start position. Focus on rotating the thoracic spine back and forth. For a deeper stretch, I also like to take this down to the elbows. 
And, just so you know, Iā€™m putting together a brand-new program starting April 13th. This is specifically for busy but committed women ages 30-60 who want to lose at least 5 pounds sustainably, gain strength and feel more confident in 60 days. Itā€™s a remote program, so you can join from anywhere in the world.

Objective:

The purpose behind this drill is to feel adequate weight distribution from an unbalanced position and to feel your lead shoulder PULL your trail arm across.

Ideally, youā€™ll feel yourself get into your trail side toe (which is good for this drill) and the arch of your lead foot.

As you can see, I get into my left side well while continuing to turn my shoulders and rotate my ribs as my trail arm fully extends.
